NHS Pharmacy First Services

This new service is expected to free up GP appointments for patients who need them most and will give people quicker and more convenient access to safe and high quality healthcare. It includes the supply of appropriate medicines for 7 common conditions where Patient can even get antibiotics without being seen by GP.

What conditions are treated under this scheme

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms related to following conditions:

  • Acute otitis media
  • Impetigo
  • Infected insect bites
  • Shingles
  • Sinusitis
  • Sore throat
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Acute otitis media

This service is available to patient age 1 to 17 years

Impetigo

This service is available for patients age 1 year and over.

Infected insect bites

This service is available to patients aged 1 year and over

Shingles

This service is available to patients aged 18 years and over

Sinusitis

This service is available to patients aged 12 years and over

Sore throat

This service is available to patients aged 5 years and over

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections

This service is available to Women aged 16-64 years

NHS blood pressure check

The NHS Community Pharmacy Blood Pressure Check Service supports risk identification and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

This service will:

  • identify people over the age of 40 who have previously not been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure), and to refer those with suspected hypertension for appropriate management.
  • promote healthy behaviours to service users.
  • undertake ad hoc clinic and ambulatory blood pressure measurements at the request of general practice.

Blood pressure will be checked using calibrated monitors. In the event of blood pressure is higher, you might be offered an ambulatory blood pressure monitor which will be fitted on your arm to take home with you. 

Reading of ambulatory blood pressure monitor will be shared with GP if hypertension is diagnosed so that you can be started on to hypertensive medications.

This service is free to patients and can be used Just by asking member of staff when you are in pharmacy or you can book an appointment below

 

Contraceptive Pill service

You can get the contraceptive pill from our pharmacy if you need to:

  • start the contraceptive pill for the first time
  • take the contraceptive pill again after a break from using it

If you already have a prescription for the contraceptive pill, you can use the prescription as usual. Or you can get the pill from us without a prescription if you prefer.

Our contraceptive pill service is free and discreet. You can continue to have pill you already on  or can discuss the option to change to a different pill. 

You will need a consultation from our pharmacist face to face or over the phone. If it is over the phone, certain pill consultation need your weight, height and blood pressure reading, so make sure you have recent reading in hand if you choose telephone consultations.  

FAQ

I'm a male and have urinary tract infection, can I book an appointment with pharmacist under pharmacy first scheme?

Pharmacy first scheme is for Women uncomplicated infections. Male urinary tract infection need specialist attention as there are greater risk of pyelonephritis. which is infection of Kidney and is life threatening if not treated urgently and generally need hospital admission.

I have got chest infection. Can I get antibiotics from pharmacy?

Under pharmacy first scheme, Pharmacist can only treat acute sore throat. Chest infection is not covered under this as diagnosis of chest infection need to be done only by GP and involves greater risk of developing further complications. If you suspect chest infection, we recommend you book appointment with GP.

What kind appointments do you offer over the phone under pharmacy first scheme ?

We can offer telephone consultation for almost all the conditions apart from ear infection as you will have to come to pharmacy so that pharmacist can have a look into your ear.

I'm interested in contraceptive pill, can I book an appointment over the phone?

Yes, you can book appointment over the phone. Please be aware that if you are on combined contraceptive pill we will need recent reading of your weight, height and blood pressure, make sure you have these handy before telephone appointment.
